The Pirates of Penzance

Gilbert & Sullivan

October 25 & 27, 2013 – Rialto Theater

A comic opera set in two acts, the Pirates of Penzance is sure to leave you smiling. The story story begins with the protagonist, Fredric, around his 21st birthday. Being 21 means that Fredric is now released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Soon, Fredric finds out that his birthday is actually on February 29th, a leap year and is not technically 21. His apprenticeship indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.
