Giacomo Puccini’s 1904 opera is a bittersweet story of innocence, love and betrayal. Pinkerton, an American naval officer stationed in Japan, marries an idealistic young Japanese geisha named Cio-cio San, also known as “Butterfly.” For Pinkerton, it is a marriage of convenience and he has no intention of staying with her. Shortly after the marriage ceremony, he leaves for America, vowing to return. Butterfly waits faithfully for three years, but finds that his vows only bring heartbreak.
