Never take a legend seriously.
The tenor isn't too bright. The soprano likes to read. The baritone is just passing through town. Can the bass's magical elixir – a rather nice vintage of Bordeaux – bring about a happy ending?
Our heroine, Adina, reads aloud the fable of the magic potion that causes Tristan to fall in love with Isolde. The naïve Nemorino believes that such a potion will cause Adina to fall in love with him, and the quack Dr. Dulcamara obligingly sells him a bottle – of something. The inevitable complications ensue, before the happy ending sends everyone merrily on their way. This charming comedy has a combination of joy, humanity, and genuine love that has seldom been equaled in opera, and Donizetti's spirited music echoes the sweetness of the story.
Come drink it in.
