Programs for Students and Teachers
Tacoma Opera's education program nurtures the growth and understanding of opera for both children and adults. We do this through two primary activities: Student Night at the Opera and a course for educators.
Bring your school group to an opera for a real-time opera experiencethat is anything but virtual.Student Night at the Opera is the final dress rehearsal of our major productions, a chance for school groups from Tacoma and the greater Puget Sound area to attend a fully-staged performance. Student Night for The Elixir of Love will take place on November 3, 2010 at 7pm at the Rialto Theater. Student Night for Pagliacci and Trouble in Tahiti will take place on March 9, 2011 at 7pm at the Pantages Theater. Tickets are $5 per student and $10 per adult chaperone. All tickets are sold in advance; no tickets are available at the door. There are no refunds or exchanges. This performance is open only to school groups and must be booked by a faculty member. A reasonable number of adult chaperones (about one chaperone for every ten students) is permitted. For more information, or to reserve tickets for your class, please call 253-627-7789 or e-mail Cheryl Baker. |
For six years, Tacoma Opera has offered an annual opera class for educators. Teachers learn the history of opera, revolving around a particular Tacoma Opera production, and receive a model lesson plan for use in their core curriculum. The curriculum has been designed to conform to EALRs for grades K-12. The class is taught by Dr. Norman Heimgartner, Professor Emeritus (retired), University of Puget Sound. Educators will leave the course with a model lesson plan, audio visual materials, and two passes to the dress rehearsal of the relevant Tacoma Opera production. Clock hours are available for an additional fee. Next year's course will focus primarily on Pagliacci and will be held on a February 2011 date TBA. For more information, or to be informed when the course date is set, please call 253-627-7789 or e-mail Cheryl Baker. |
