Dear Friends of Tacoma Opera,
In the theater, there is a long-standing tradition that when a stage is empty with no performance going on, a single light is placed in the center of the stage and stays lit until the stage is once again active and the theater is filled with people. This light is known as a ghost light.
While there are various tales, superstitions, and notions as to how the ghost light originated, its significance means that, although a theater is empty, we will return. With the Novel Coronavirus impacting the entire world, theaters are empty everywhere and thousands of ghost lights are acting as small beacons of hope, declaring that every singer, artist, actor, director, designer, dancer, stage manager, technician, electrician, student, teacher and audience member will be back… Each of us will return.
Yes, we will return. When the crisis is over, Tacoma Opera will be back and be better than ever. But for the time being, everyone in our industry is taking a huge hit in the wake of the pandemic, both financially and emotionally. I therefore ask you to remember all the artists, musicians and production personnel who are without work and without income in these uncertain times because they are bearing the brunt of the crisis in the Arts.
They are the ones who are hurting the most, so please help them out by donating to the Tacoma Opera Artist Fund. All donations to the fund received between now and May 31 will be shared with the artists, musicians and production personnel of Iolanthe, which is the production we had to cancel because of the pandemic. Our goal is to raise $20,000 by May 31 so we can give everyone in Iolanthe a little something that will help tide them over until the theaters are full again in the Fall.
Let’s show the people that work so hard for so little, that bring us joy, making us laugh and sometimes cry, that we care about them. Let’s make sure they know that we have not forgotten them. The glimmer of hope from the ghost light is an assurance that Tacoma Opera will be back; and support from patrons and opera lovers like you is an assurance for the artists, musicians and production personnel that they will be back too, that we’ll all be back together. Let’s all be ghost lights and give a glimmer of hope.
Please give what you can to the Tacoma Opera Artist Fund.
We encourage people to donate on a monthly basis because it’s easier on your budget and it makes our cash flow more manageable. You can set up monthly donations by checking the monthly payment box on the PayPal donation page.
