I haven’t posted anything in the last couple of weeks because the Opera has been experiencing so much change recently. And as always, change upsets our rhythm and our routine, so I’ve been reluctant to write about it until now.
Of course it’s the time of year when we’re changing from Summer to Fall and that is to be expected because it’s natural. But sometimes change can be unexpected and quite unsettling. And that’s the kind of change we’re experiencing right now at the Opera because we’ve changed our 2014-15 Season, which is no small thing for any opera company.
We had originally scheduled Gilbert & Sullivan’s ever popular “The Mikado” for the 2015 February production, but because its comic storyline is centered around the satirical theme of beheadings, we simply couldn’t justify doing the show while American, British and French citizens are losing their lives in this barbaric fashion in the Middle East. It was a difficult decision for us to make, but it was one we felt we had to make. So now we’ll be doing another G&S show in the February slot, “HMS Pinafore,” also a fun show and hopefully not nearly so controversial. I’m sad we won’t be doing Mikado because I love the show, but it’s just not the right time for it now. Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to Pinafore and know it’s going to be great fun.
