Onegin Artwork

This romantic gem of the Russian operatic repertoire, has never been presented before by Tacoma Opera! By moving to Theater on The Square, we will be doing this production as Tchaikovsky originally envisioned it: in an intimate, chamber setting that will better tell this bittersweet tale of a love that could have been. The sensitive young Tatyana, in love with her neighbor, Onegin, overcomes her natural shyness and writes him a letter asking him to marry her. His refusal humiliates her. At her birthday ball, his attentions to her sister Olga infuriate his friend Lenski, Olga’s fiancé, who challenges him to a duel. Onegin accepts and kills his friend. After years of repentant wandering, Onegin visits the court of his cousin, Prince Gremin and to his astonishment, finds that Tatyana is Gremin’s wife. Onegin falls desperately in love with her. Though tempted, in the end she remains faithful to Gremin, leaving Onegin alone and remorseful.
